Hardware: power controller and IC card

LIMS-CF uses our proprietary power controllers to manage the access to equipments that are not controlled directly by computers. An equipment user slides his personal IC card on the power controller to get authenticated. The intelligent power controller then relays the user identity to the core LIMS-CF software system on a central server through the intranet to authorize the user for using the equipment. Once the user is authorized, the controller powers on the equipment.

The power controllers use high-end batteries to ensure extremely high level of reliability.

The brain of the system, the core LIMS-CF software can be hosted on a server in any remote location, allowing it to control access to equipments in different buildings or even different geological locations.

Software:

  • Access Control:
  • This is the core functionality of LIMS-CF. Equipment users only have access to the equipments they have booked and can only use them for the booked periods. User authentication and authorization (AA) for using equipments controlled by computers are done through the native network-based AA mechanisms on the operating systems of the computers. Users AA for using stand-alone equipments are done through the power controller connected to the LIMS-CF core as described in the hardware section.

  • Booking:
  • Booking is easy with LIMS-CF. Users simply mark the per-equipment calendars in the system. LIMS-CF has the intelligence to track the users’ usage and payment history. LIMS-CF administrators can set criteria based on such history to warn users of usage violation or/and payment delays, or even temporarily or permanently block the violating users from future booking.

  • Usage Rating and Billing:
  • LIMS-CF rates equipment usages based on particular rating plans and bills the proper organizations.

  • Equipment Maintenance and Repair Management:
  • LIMS-CF allows administrators to track usage history, printing reports, and schedule proper maintenance or repairs. Users can conveniently report any issues with the equipments.

  • Access-controlled Data Sharing:
  • Data/files generated from experiments using the equipments can be easily stored and indexed by the users in the LIMS-CF system. Proper access controls implemented by LIMS-CF only allow reading, writing (including updating, deleting, and copying), or transferring to other computers of the data by the authorized users or groups.

  • User Grouping:
  • Users can be grouped by their laboratory and other types of affiliations. The grouping can also be a sophisticated hierarchical structure. This allows group-based access control to the equipments or data, and group-based rating and billing.
